The arrival of a man from the city named Shakes, introduces Ilanga to the world of truth. Ilanga has to choose whether to align himself with the norms and cultural beliefs of the village or liberate himself from the chains of oppression, because he knows, “no one rebels against the rural law and lives to tell”.
